Why families pay as one
One bill per invite, not per person through the door.
Money is settled per household rather than per person. A family of five appears as one line on the balances screen, owing one amount.
How households are worked out
Everyone with a Daawat account belongs to at most one family, set from your profile. The people in that family are your household on every couples and family event. Guests with no family stand alone.
Solo events have no households. Every guest is billed as one person.
Who the bill lands on
One person in each household is the billing person. Daawat picks them in this order:

The host, then any co-hosts
If someone in the household is running the event, the household bills to them.

Whoever the host invited
Where the invitation went decides it, not who is head of the family. If the host invited the wife, the bill is hers.

The head of the family
Used when the steps above do not settle it.
If you are not the billing person
Your household's total appears on the balances list under the billing person's name, and your settle screen tells you there is nothing for you to pay. Your share is included in that total, settled by one person on behalf of all of you.
Note — Guest lists and balance rows show the invited person's name first, with the family name beneath it.
